Sex Toy Assignment
Believe it or not, this was an official Industrial Design degree university assignment. We were given a lightweight, return from summer break, Contextual Design assignment: Design a sex toy concept to present in class in a week.
I thought it would be fun and also being me, I did not go for the easy option of a bog standard vibrator for females. I wanted to go for something more original and out of the box, thus more interesting and less boring.

Situation
- I decided to design something for males, as far fewer products and many are poor standard.
- Males tent not to respond to vibrating sensations. Males respond to far more realistic organic sensations, very much simulating real sexual activity such as oral sex and intercourse. Sucking, stroking, organic feel, wet, squeezing, licking etc.
- Males ‘tend’ to be attracted to practical, powerful, angular, feature laden technology, the more the merrier, rather than expensive looking classy elegance, emotional feel, scent, cuteness, tactile, smooth, flowing, pastel colours, delicate sexiness often seen in female led products.
- There is a far greater market for female sex toys at present than males, partly as it is currently considered seedy looser for males whilst modern, acceptable, confident for females to enjoy especially with more open, female friendly shops such as Harmony and Ann Summers. Females also tend to have an easier time attracting partners in places like clubs.
- This indicates a market gap that could be filled profitably with the right product, that is feature laden, has realistic sensations, that can hide its true purpose and be considered stylish to males, something more superhero armour like.
Inspiration
- Going for something with a comedy value moves away from a feeling of seediness, more so if it could involve a partner. For example the female loss of the remote control to vibrating undies when in a public place so she cannot remove or deactivate them whilst someone plays with the control gag such as in the movie, ‘The Ugly Truth’ or male getting oral whilst giving a presentation such as in the film, ‘Police Academy’ both indicate immature fun to be had with remote control sex toy devices. Involving a mischievous partner adds to the fun giving them control and also being more of a couple than a solo toy again makes it less seedy and something fun for a couple to purchase together. It also allows a single male purchaser to say it is for couple use.
- Having not one but multiple sensations, features, adding in phone app control, remote control, gadgets all help the gadget lover offering value.
Design Concept
Here the design concept was for a male version of The Ugly Truth remote control vibrating panties type sex toy you can find in stores now, but giving oral sex and licking like sensations to various parts of male sexual anatomy.
- The material would need to feel wet and realist skin feel.
- Have flexible tongue elements that could move in different patterns.
- It would have a penetrative oral/intercourse element.
- Have a remote system that could be phone controlled from anywhere or during romantic calls.
- It also comes with a lollypop like controller where the partner very much like stimulating their partner for real.
- This was designed in Solidworks with Keyshot as a renderer. At the time I did not have the skills to make this more a organic looking so apologies for the medieval torture device like look. The time was also quite limited for a low grade project as well.
- A finished item would need far more engineering design and probably be expensive as much more complex than a standard vibrator.
- The device would also be encased in boxer short like material or something like speakers to hide its true use.
- The controller would also be more elegant and maybe resemble a pen that a female could normally be nibbling. The idea being lots of fun for the partner too and more mischief then dirty.
