Creative Media Skills Prop Making Essentials Course

Creative Media Skills is an industry training organisation in Pinewood Studios that specialises in art department skill short courses such as Prop Design, Model Making, Prosthetics, Costume, Wigs and Special Effects.

Introduced to deal with a skills shortage in the industry, what makes it stand out are that all courses are taught, not by academic teachers but by long term industry professionals have been responsible for some of the top physical special effects, props, makeup, sets in the movie industry building reputations over decades with films including some of the Star Wars films, Kingsmen, Stardust, Batman, Blade Runner and the Chronicles of Narnia etc.

The tutors here were Leigh Took and daughter Lauren from Mattes and Miniatures Visual Effects Ltd. Please see links a the bottom of this page lincluding the IMDB page listing Leigh's creative history. These were some of the props made on the Prop Making Essentials Course. The tools were made with 2 part silicon moulds made during the week, backed with fibreglass and cast in gun foam.

The green alien egg was first attempt to use fast cast using their silicon mould. The mould was provided but we did the casting and colouring. Likewise the tools came from their 2 part silcon mould, I cast in gun foam and painted the tools.

Dragon Sculpt Mould and Fast Cast

The dragon was a first use of Plastaline to sculpt, silicon mould then fast cast the sculpt on the course. This was done in an afternoon and early morning with time runnign out when it came to the dead and face.

Would have liked more time to work on the face and head but needed to get on with other course elements.
